Luckily I’m over a decade too old to be drafted (and my body is falling apart). Also, of course the draft is a political non-starter, and now that women are allowed to serve in combat positions, probably unconstitutionally discriminatory as well.

The draft will never happen. Everyone is too fat and unhealthy. Cheaper to make drones and then Activision comes out with Modern Warfare Drone Edition with realistic graphics ;)

Shockingly, the courts keep upholding the constitutionality of the draft, in spite of repeated lawsuits. There’s no way that it can be considered equal based on the situation today.

But I also agree that it’s a political non-starter and not necessary when there are a lot of poor people that sign up to be fed into the shredder without having to hide the kids of the elites through various loopholes. It has been the employer of last resort for a substantial portion of the population that can’t afford to live in this country any longer for decades.

The really interesting part is that in the modern military, if it came to a draft, they’d probably tap a lot of people that think they’d be unsuitable for military service. Unskilled draftees are only useful as infantry, but who fights ground wars much  anymore?
